A 17-month old baby girl has died after drowning in her family's backyard pool at Holloways Beach last night.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said they were called to the residence around 6.50pm.

She said they gave instructions to the family over the phone to commence CPR with paramedics continuing to try and revive her while she was transported to Cairns Base Hospital, but she died on arrival.

Police will now prepare a report for the coroner.
