The Cairns Post Hit Awards 2013 to celebrate entertainment talent
THE Cairns entertainment and arts scene is celebrating tonight with The Cairns Post Hit Awards 2013 gala at Gilligan's.
Readers, nominees and the local entertainment and arts scene alike are invited to attend the free event, where the winners of this year's awards will be announced, alongside performances from some of the region's most popular live musicians.
Voted for and by Hit readers online at cairns.com.au, the Hit Awards are The Cairns Post's way of recognising and celebrating the year's best musicians, venues, theatre and stage shows, art exhibitions and performers after what was a massive 2012 of entertainment.
The 2013 awards featured 24,166 votes, making it the most successful in the competition's four-year history, setting the stage for a big night this Saturday to celebrate.
Hosted by popular local identity Tammy Barker and The Cairns Post entertainment editor Jesse Kuch, entertainment comes from blues wiz kids The Montgomery Brothers, singer-songwriter Louarde, Innisfail rockers Zilch and the mountain sounds of The Hillbilly Goats.
Mr Kuch said that alongside this year's awards being the biggest vote in history, the individual categories were also the closest in four years, with as few as 10 votes separating the winners from the rest in some categories.
"We introduced a new and much fairer voting system in 2013, so I'm really happy that the awards have been such a success," he said.
"Very little separated the winners in a few of the major categories this year, with some even taking it out last minute on the very last day of voting.
"I'm really looking forward to the weekend."
The Cairns Post Hit Awards 2013 gala is at Gilligan's tonight, from 8pm-10.30pm (red carpet from 7.30pm). Entry is free. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
