Young indigenous Cairns voices to sing their hearts out
CAIRNS State High School will be alive with the sounds of music on Saturday with auditions for the Cairns Gondwana Indigenous Children's Choir.
Artistic Director and founder of Gondwana Choirs Lyn Williams OAM said the choir, with 40 children, could be expanded to accommodate 60.
"We want lots of new children to get lots of great opportunity," Ms Williams said.
"They have a high level of training and do a number of performances all around Australia."
Among the highlights for the choir in the past year was being flown to Canberra for an opening in Parliament House and meeting the prime minister, Julia Gillard, and a recording with singer songwriter Seaman Dan.
This year the choir will rehearse Nguila Boy of the Stars, an opera based on Torres Strait Island stories and dancing.
"The choir is a fantastic way to learn about the world of music and song in many languages including local indigenous languages," Ms Williams said.
"We especially want to encourage boys and young men with changed or changing voices to join the choir."
Children aged 10 and up are asked to go to Cairns State High School on Saturday and sing the song they are most comfortable singing.
"Typically the children are nervous, which is good, it means it really matters to them," Ms Williams said.
"They shouldn't feel they are not prepared."
"We want it to be a happy experience just bring bags of enthusiasm."
Auditions for the Cairns Gondwana Indigenous Children's Choir are at Cairns State High School on Saturday from 3pm to 4.30 in Music Room E20.
