A LITTLE slice of South African heaven is tantalising tastebuds in Cairns.

The Jerky & Nut Shop is the brainchild of Cairns man Chris Hawkins, who opened the store in December last year after he noticed a gap in the market for healthy snacks.

Now the largest supplier of South African food products in Far North Queensland, Mr Hawkins said having South African cuisine wasn't his original plan.

"I came across a couple of biltong (South African-style air dried beef) and as South Africans were finding this place, they were asking for more variety," he said.

"I increased an entire wall for biltong and the natural progression was grocery lines.

Mr Hawkins said he believed  The Jerky & Nut Shop was home to the biggest selection of jerky and biltong in Australia.

"Jerky is an American product where a lean piece of beef is marinated, sliced thin and cooked," he said.

"Biltong is a naturally cured beef, with vinegar, salt, pepper and coriander seed, so it is a much healthier option."

The Jerky & Nut Shop is located at 82 Sheridan St, Cairns, call 4041 7057.
