Kelly scores club captain role
BENTLEY Park student Kelly Pitcher has become the official face for Cairns' W-League aspirations after being named FNQ FC club captain this week.
The Queensland representative was picked alongside senior men's player Alex Plowman to serve in the role for the National Premier Leagues club.
FNQ FC general manager Peter Tokesi said Pitcher's appointment signified the important role women's soccer would play in the club.
"Having a female club captain on an equal standing to the NPL squad skipper is especially important to this club, given the region's record in producing female footballers who go on to higher honours," he said.
FNQ FC officials have said previously that they would like to see a National Youth League team and W-League team based in Cairns, to support an A-League team in Townsville.
"The FFA has entrusted us to develop the region's elite footballers and provide the pathway to the W-League, A-League, Socceroos and Matildas", Tokesi said.
"But we are also about supporting the development of young men and women with strong personal qualities off the field as well. I'm confident Alex and Kelly will be great leaders and ambassadors for us."
