Drunk in Cairns court woman jailed
A WOMAN who turned up to her Cairns District Court trial drunk and sat in the dock with a stash of alcohol has been sentenced to four years' jail for running a friend over in her car while intoxicated.
Bronwyn Mary Newton, 40, was supposed to face a trial on Wednesday, but it was cancelled at the 11th hour when it was noticed she was drunk and slurring her words.
Judge Bill Everson demanded she remain in custody to sober up before appearing in court again yesterday, when it was revealed watch-house staff had found alcohol on her after she was taken from the dock.
