Phoenix edge out Redlynch in super league basketball
PHOENIX have knocked off minor premiers Redlynch to claim an automatic berth in the FNQ Super League's decider in a fortnight's time, continuing the finals torment for the red and blue.
They have been the dominant force of the competition in the past three years, but Redlynch are yet to win a title in that time and will face All Stars in a cut-throat preliminary final this weekend to earn their spot in the decider.
Phoenix, led by Curt Ahwang's 28 points, overcame an early deficit and managed to hang on in a tense and high quality game.
Matt Adekponya (25 points) missed a triple on the buzzer that would have sent it to overtime and now his side this weekend will face All Stars, who will be led by Shaun Bruce, Justin Soleimani and Matt Andronicos.
All Stars beat Saints 100-64 in the elimination semi-final on Sunday on the back of Soleimani's 35 points.
Veteran Brenton Campbell had an amazing 37 in a losing team, while league MVP candidate CJ Ahwang finished the game on the sidelines with an achilles injury.
