Kamerunga

Kamerunga is an established residential area on the western edge of the Cairns Local Government Area. The area has a number of suburban residential pockets, characterised by hill slope development, with some unit development. The natural environment is a key feature of the suburb, including the nearby Barron Gorge. The Douglas Track starts and ends in the suburb, at Stoney Creek, and provides a link to Kuranda. The Stoney Creek National Park and Rainforest Estate provide links to many bushwalks in the local area. Kamerunga is about 24mins north-west of Cairns CBD.

The population of Kamerunga consists mainly of families and commuters who have chosen to live there for ‘lifestyle’. The main characteristic of the area is the natural environment with Stoney Creek and the Barron River being major features, and also constraints to future development.

There are no medical facilities in Kamerunga. The nearest services are in Redlynch to the south and in Smithfield, about 10mins drive to the north. The closest hospital is Cairns Base Hospital about 15mins drive south-east.

Kamerunga has few actual community facilities or services, with the local population accessing adjacent areas. Transport Technology Park is the main park in the area. The nearest library is in either Stratford to the south or Smithfield, about 10mins drive to the north. The closes swimming pool is also in Smithfield.

Shopping

There is no shopping in this suburb. The closest convenience stores are in Caravonica; about 5mins drive north or Redlynch, about 5mins drive south-west. The closest major shopping centre is Smithfield Shopping Centre about 10mins drive north.

Childcare

There is no child care centre in Kamerunga. The closest options are in Redlynch, Freshwater and Caravonica, about 10mins drive away.

School

There are no schools in Kamerunga. The adjacent suburb of Redlynch offers a number of schools including state primary, a Catholic college (Prep-12) and a Christian college in Brinsmead. There is another state high school at Smithfield which is about 10-15mins drive north.
