Mission Beach is located on the coast south of Cairns about 2hours12mins drive from Cairns CBD. Made up of a number of beaches, Mission Beach, South Mission Beach and Wongalinga Beach, the town is mainly a tourist attraction as the gateway to Dunk and Bedarra islands and the northern end of the Whitsunday islands. The main industries are tourism and some agriculture on the interior coast and fishing. There are also a number of artists working in the area. Mission Beach is part of the Cassowary Coast Council and is next to the Wet Tropics Rainforest heritage area with a number of state and national parks offering good walking and hiking tracks. Mission Beach also has a number of watersports outlets.

The people

The population of Mission Beach is about 1,000 including the surrounding areas, and is made up mainly of young singles working in the tourism industry and farming families. Mission Beach is a very popular holiday destination for residents of Cairns and those from further afield; there is a substantial number of holiday homes that are rented out during the year. Accommodation ranges from expensive beachside homes to cheaper, older-style accommodation. There is also a caravan park. There is a great deal of holiday accommodation available including a number of resorts and the luxury resorts on the islands of Dunk and Bedarra.

General facilities

Mission Beach has a police station, post office, community hall, boat ramp and a stinger net on the beach. There is a library located at Wongalinga Beach, a suburb of Mission Beach. Mission Beach also has parks and gardens and some sporting grounds.

Medical

There are a number of medical general practitioners and a pathology lab in Mission Beach. The nearest hospital is at Tully, about 35mins drive southeast of Mission Beach. For more extensive medical, dental and pathology services residents travel to Innisfail, about 52mins drive north.

Shopping

Mission Beach is a tourist town and offers a wide variety of shopping catering to this market. There are some yoga and other fitness outlets. There is also a number of grocery and convenience stores, pubs, restaurants, cafés, art galleries and a few services like builders, plumbers and cleaners and takeaway food outlets. There are a number of petrol stations and specific tourism industry services like dive shops. For other shopping including hardware and furniture residents travel to either Tully, about 35mins drive southeast or to Innisfail, about 52mins drive north. The largest major shopping centre is in the Cairns suburb of Earlville, about 2hours drive north.

Childcare

Mission Beach has a number of child care options including a kindergarten and Prep Year.

Schools

Mission Beach has a number of primary schools in the area but the nearest high schools are located in Tully, about 35mins drive southwest or in Innisfail, about 52mins drive north.

Public transport

There are a number of bus companies and taxi services in the Mission Beach area including school buses that travel to the towns of Tully and Innisfail. There is also a water taxi service that travels daily to Dunk and Bedarra islands.
