Portsmith

Portsmith is an inner city area, which is focused on Industrial activity. The area is a major employment node for Cairns. It is a low-lying flood area, and much of the land is not suitable for any type of development. This is a mainly low-income accommodation suburb but there have recently been some apartment complexes developed. Portsmith is about 5mins drive south of Cairns CBD.

The people

Almost everyone in Portsmith is over the age of 30, and many are from non-English speaking backgrounds. 'Other' housing types characterise the landscape – that is boats and caravans. Poverty is an issue facing many of the people living in Portsmith.

General facilities

Portsmith itself has few community facilities and services, as it is dominated by industrial activities; however Parramatta Park and other adjacent suburbs offer services to residents. The nearest library is the Cairns City Library and the nearest swimming pools are the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon and the Tobruk Memorial Pool.

Medical

There are no medical facilities in Portsmith but the adjacent suburbs of Cairns city and Parramatta Park have a full complement of medical, dental and pathology services including a plastic surgeon. The nearest hospital is Cairns Base Hospital, about 5mins drive north.

Shopping

Portsmith has a number of convenience stores and takeaway food outlets. The nearest supermarkets are at Cairns Central Shopping Centre, about 5mins drive north. DFO Cairns is in Westcourt, about 4mins drive north.

Childcare

There are no child care facilities in Portsmith. The nearby suburbs of Parramatta Park, Manunda and Westcourt offer child care services.

School

There are no schools in Portsmith. The adjacent suburb of Parramatta Park has a state primary school, a Catholic primary school and St Augustine’s College, an all-boys Catholic boarding high school. St Monica’s all-girls Catholic school is nearby in Cairns city.

Public transport

Sunbus services some parts of Portsmith. Taxis also service the area but booking in advance is necessary.
