Tinaroo

Tinaroo is the rapidly growing suburb based around Lake Tinaroo on the Atherton Tablelands west of Cairns. Tinaroo is about 1hour33mins drive southwest of Cairns CBD and about 28mins drive north of Atherton. Created in 1959 when the Tinaroo Dam came into being, the township of Tinaroo is a popular holiday and fishing location for Cairns residents and visitors to the area. There is a shopping hub with has a convenience store and holiday accommodation but the bulk of the population live on acreage in the surrounding area.

The population of Tinaroo is about 210 people, the majority of which are retirees living acreage and hobby farms in the surrounding area. There are some holiday-style apartments near the lakeshore and a number of holiday homes and bed and breakfast accommodation options.

Major emergency and surgery patients travel to Cairns Base Hospital, about 1hour33mins drive northeast via the Gillies or Kuranda range roads.

There are boat ramps and a jetty as well as a small convenience shopping hub. The closest library, post office, police station and other community services are at Atherton, about 28mins drive south.

There is a convenience shopping hub in Tinaroo with basic services and camping supplies. There are a number of takeaway food options and a restaurant. Major shopping options can be found at Atherton, about 28mins drive south, Malanda, about 45mins drive south or in Mareeba, about 40mins drive north. The closest major shopping centre is in the Cairns suburb of Smithfield, about 1hour15mins drive north via the Kuranda Range Road.
