Tolga

The township of Tolga is located just north of Atherton, about 1hour and 15mins drive from Cairns CBD and only 6mins drive from Atherton. The Atherton Industrial Estate is situated between Tolga and Atherton and the area is mainly used for agricultural purposes including the growing of maize, peanuts, potatoes, avocadoes, mangoes etc. The attraction of Tolga Timbers, an operating timber mill with café and art gallery of carved, local timber work, is also located at the northern entrance of the town. Tolga is also home to a bed ‘n’ breakfast and a number of accommodation options for visitors.

The people

Tolga has only about 1,000 people living there and most are engaged in agriculture, however the elevated subdivisions of Rangeview and Tandara are popular rural residential estates on the edge of the township and offer acreage for hobby farms or keeping horses etc. The population is mostly made up of young families.

Medical

Tolga has no medical facilities but the service town of Atherton is only 6mins drive south. Atherton offers a range of medical, dental and pathology services. The closest hospital is Atherton Hospital.

General facilities

Tolga has a number of community facilities including a post office, racecourse, sports ground, tennis courts and a newsagent. The closest library is in Atherton, about 6mins drive south. There is also a church.

Shopping

There is a convenience store hub with fuel and takeaway food outlets, a butcher, a bakery, a pub and a greengrocer who specialises in local and tropical foods. Tolga also has a motel, a caravan park, a backpacker hostel and a bed ‘n’ breakfast.

Childcare

Tolga does not have any child care facilities but the adjacent town of Atherton has some child care options.

School

There is a state primary school in Tolga and the nearby town of Atherton has a number of schooling options including a state high school and a Catholic primary school.

Public transport

There is not a lot of public transport in the Atherton region. The Whitecar Coaches operate buses around the Atherton Tablelands and take passengers to Cairns and other nearby towns like Babinda and Innisfail. There are taxis that operate in Atherton and to surrounding villages and towns like Tolga.
