About 30 minutes north of Cairns on the Captain Cook Highway, Palm Cove is a destination in itself. With its white sandy beach, rainforest backdrop and coconut palms, this residential and tourist attraction is picture postcard perfect.
Palm Cove is considered to be one of the ‘poshest’ spots in the Cairns region. Home to a nice blend of visitors, Palm accommodation ranges from caravan parks to super five star luxury resorts and local residents, some living in beach shacks and others in massive tropical mansions.
Palm Cove offers visitors a number of great accommodation options, particularly with spa resorts. In fact the beachside suburb is becoming known for its spas.
Villa Paradiso on Williams Esplanade offers a variety of villas from one to four bedrooms with large balconies overlooking the beach. The only absolute beachfront Palm Cove accommodation can be found at Angsana Resort & Spa, also on Williams Esplanade. Angsana offers 67 luxury suites with Thai silk drapes and wide verandas.
Another luxury option is the Sebel Reef House & Spa, right in the middle of Williams Esplanade. Renowned in Cairns for its restaurant, the resort features traditional Queenslander architecture with fabulous tropical gardens. There are three swimming pools, complimentary CDs and a tour desk.
The most recent addition to the luxury resorts at Palm Cove is Sanctuary Palm Cove, a combined resort and exclusive holiday home facility. There are 21 resort apartments over 3 acres of tropical gardens that are a Royal Australian Institute of Architects award winner and Sanctuary Palm Cove is one of the top three hotels in Queensland. The resort’s restaurant is also considered to be one of the best in the Cairns region.
There is also a range of other accommodation with Palm Cove holiday apartments and rentals available for those who wish to self-cater. There is even a caravan park for those who wish to camp or hire a van and it’s right on the beach.
Although it is the fastest growing suburb in Cairns, Palm Cove has managed to keep its island resort feel. There is a real village atmosphere along the beach that has managed been named ‘Queensland’s Cleanest Beach’, ‘Far North Queensland’s Friendliest Beach’ and even ‘Australia’s Cleanest Beach’.
Palm Cove has a great jetty that offers visitors a place to fish or a place to pick up a boat to the reef and a variety of dive sites. It is also one of the most popular photographic spots for Cairns wedding images. And just across the strait is Double Island, a luxury resort that costs about $10,000 per night and has been home to international stars like Keanu Reeves.
Every thing at Palm Cove is within walking distance with great restaurants, funky bars and casual cafes sitting side-by-side with a great local Life Saving Club, a corner fish and chip shop that does great meals and a regular supermarket. There is even a car hire company for those looking for their own wheels.
There are a number of great activities available at Palm Cove – watersports, windsurfing and even a golf course – so that visitors never have to leave. In the surrounding area are Ellis Beach, Cairns Tropical Zoo and Clifton Beach Shopping Centre.
